New Program Aims At Helping Students Afford Food

Many University and College students are having a hard time paying for food.

Last year, the charity Meal Exchange conducted a study on student hunger on five Canadian campuses including Lakehead and found that 8% of students has experienced severe food insecurity.

LU Researcher Charles Levkoe says there are a number of reasons for this.

"Part of that is due directly to the high cost of tuition generally, but also the high cost of housing and food in Northern Ontario."

A national organization alongside LU and Meal Exchange will be putting a pilot program in place at our school to improve student access to food.

Levkoe adds the program could be anything from helping support the existing food bank which is an immediate issue, and long term solutions like changing policy on a more structural level.
