2018 is a municipal election year, but don't expect any candidates to register on January 1st.

City Clerk John Hannam says the provincial government changed the registration dates.

The nomination period is different for 2018, it will run from May 1st to July 27th.

Candidates for Mayor and City Council will have three months to throw their hat into the ring.

Hannam says they hope to see more people come out and vote.

"It's a bit of a struggle. That we hit around 50% [voter turnout] is not something to be very proud of,"

"We;ll be certainly, through the year, promoting the election and helping people be aware of when, where, and how to [cast their vote]." (File Photo)
